Everybody Hear Me Out
Çiçek Kahraman

On 9 March 2018 Friday at 6pm, MARSistanbul welcomes the spring season with Çiçek Kahraman's video work called 'Everybody Hear Me Out.' Edited with footage gathered from 'mahalle' films -a sub-genre in Turkish Cinema-, the video focuses on forms of relationships established with the outside world through the agency of the windows. It explores how 'windows' are represented in these movies as an area of socialisation, and how the concept of ‘neighbourhood’ is defined in terms of 'public' and 'private.' The footage consists of shots of people in windows either looking at or talking to someone, and is gathered from movies produced in Turkey between 1960 and 1985; a period referred to as Yeşilçam. Patterns of gender representation and stereotypes in Yeşilçam cinema along with themes likes community pressure and glorification of marriage could be traced in the video. In Everybody Hear Me Out, rather than presenting a collection of nostalgic images from Yeşilçam era, Kahraman uncovers a fundamental reality: a vivid neighbourhood life in constant transformation during a time when the big cities especially Istanbul is taking in a huge migration from the country, where the local stores have not yet been replaced by market chains, when the buildings that in time have come to define the city's character are newly being built just to be torn down today for the sake of gentrification, where the concept of neighbourhood is not only defined by the physical space, and where hidden eroticism exist from one window to the other.

Çiçek Kahraman is a film editor, and a video artist. She has been working as a professional film editor for 15 years and has edited over two dozen feature films most of which have been screened and awarded at festivals in Europe. In her video works she works with found footage, and her videos' themes revolve around gender definitions and alienation. She has a master’s degree on film making at Boston University, and teaches master classes at film festivals, and film editing at Kadir Has University.

On 9 March 2018 Friday at 6:30pm, Çiçek Kahraman will be giving a talk on the production process of the video.
